Prep sheet

Before and after a heat treatment

Print this page, or ask us for copies for your building. Doing these things is part of the re-treatment terms.

  • The week before

    • Wash and dry bedding, curtains and clothes on high heat for at least 30 minutes

    • Seal clean laundry in bags and keep it bagged

    • Tell the super the date and where the crew can park

    • Don't throw out furniture or a mattress without telling us first

  • The night before

    • Pull furniture about a foot from the walls

    • Clear floors, closets and the space under beds

    • Take out heat-sensitive things (see the list below)

    • Arrange a place for people, pets and plants to be all day

  • On the day

    • Open drawers, closet doors and cabinet doors

    • Leave the unit when the crew arrives, with a phone we can reach

    • Don't come back in until we say it has cooled

  • After

    • Open windows when you return and let the unit air out

    • Keep clean laundry bagged until we say it can come out

    • Keep mattress covers on, if we put them on

    • Be home or reachable for the follow-up inspection

Take these out before the heat

Heat can melt, burst or spoil them.

  • Candles, wax and crayons

  • Aerosol cans and lighters

  • Medications

  • Vinyl records and some instruments

  • Plants and fish tanks

  • Food that melts, like chocolate

Please don't

  • Use store-bought sprays or foggers

They can scatter bugs into other units.

  • Move things to a neighbor's apartment

Bugs ride along, and the neighbor didn't ask for them.

  • Put a mattress on the curb unwrapped

Tell us first. We'll say how to wrap it and who to call.
